Roman Gallic "G" Helm

Price $480.00
This helm saw use from the third quarter of the 1st Century AD to the middle of the 2nd Century AD, and beyond. Considered to be the standard helm of Roman Legionnaires during this time period, it became a symbol of the Roman Empire that is recognizable even today. The best example was found in the Rhine River at Mainz- Weisenau and is now exhibited in Worms, Germany. The brass rosettes on this resemble those found on the Corbridge type lorica segmentata. The helm was originally an improvement of the helm that the Gauls used while they were fighting against the Romans. The cheek flaps left space around the ears to allow the wearer to hear his orders on the battle field. The jutting brow of the helm was designed to absorb the blow of edged weapons, and disperse the impact across the helm. Includes a horse hair crest that runs from the front of the helm to the back.
