An iaito is a Japanese sword that has no edge and is traditionally used for studying the art of iaido. This use a blunt edge also meets the Japanese legal requirement that restricts the manufacture of swords. As such, iaito are intended as practice weapons and are not suited for any type of contact. The best blades are rather faithful reproductions of real swords with authentic weight, shape, similarly high-quality finish and fittings. Iaito may even feature a hamon (the temper line seen on traditional katanas).
This Iaito blade is made of high-carbon steel, to better stand up to the punishment of training. The tsuka is wrapped in white same (ray skin) with Japanese cotton used for the tsuka-ito and sageo. The tsuba, fuchi and kashira all feature the same etched wave pattern. The menuki, habaki, seppa and shitodome are all made of copper.
